The specification requires that the butter ripen and be churned within that area, using only milk or cream from the same region; no raw material from outside the delimited zone is permitted. In addition to conditions prescribed by Belgian law for butter generally, the product must satisfy precise chemical composition criteria and bear the inspection mark of the National Dairy Office, issued following an organoleptic test. Packets must carry the proprietor's number and initials approved under the relevant Ministerial Decrees. Two inspection bodies are authorised by Royal Decree: PROMAG asbl, based in Arlon, and QUALITY CONTROL sc, based in Brussels. The designation was recognised in Belgian law in 1984, following sustained pressure from Ardennes producers and agricultural organisations who sought to end improper use of the Ardenne name outside the region.
