About this designation
Aceite del Baix Ebre-Montsià, also registered as Oli del Baix Ebre-Montsià, is a PDO extra virgin olive oil produced from olives of the species Olea Europea L. belonging to three native varieties: Morruda or Morrut, Sevillenca, and Farga. The production area is confined to the comarcas of Baix Ebre and Montsià in the province of Tarragona, in the south of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia, bordering the comarcas of Baix Maestrat (province of Castellón) and Matarraña (province of Teruel). Approximately 96 % of the crop is grown on dry soil, with 4 % on irrigated land. Olives must be harvested directly from the tree; those that have fallen to the ground are discarded. The time between harvesting and crushing may not exceed 48 hours. The use of abscission products is not authorised. Extraction is carried out by mechanical or other physical means that do not modify the oil. Packaging in containers of up to five litres must be carried out within the defined geographical area. Oils that pass all physical, chemical, and sensory analyses are released to market bearing the PDO name and a numbered quality seal or back label issued by the Consejo Regulador de la Denominación de Origen Protegida 'Aceite del Baix Ebre-Montsià' u 'Oli del Baix Ebre-Montsià', located at Carretera Raval de Crist s/n, Tortosa. The designation was registered under file number PDO-ES-0274 and carries eAmbrosia identifier EUGI00000013619.
