Extra-virgin olive oil produced within a defined area of the province of Girona, Catalonia, from the Argudell, Curivell, Llei de Cadaqués and Arbequina varieties. Argudell must account for a minimum of 51 % of the oil in any mixture, and Argudell and Arbequina together must account for over 95 % of the mixture. The designation covers no other category of olive oil.

Registered as a PDO under file number PDO-ES-1161, with EU protection granted on 23 September 2013 and eAmbrosia identifier EUGI00000014375, the designation covers extra-virgin olive oil obtained by mechanical processes or other physical means that do not impair the oil. The protected geographical area comprises the 68 municipalities of the comarca of Alt Empordà and the 36 municipalities of the comarca of Baix Empordà, five municipalities in the comarca of Gironès (Viladasens, Sant Jordi Desvalls, Flaçà, Madremanya and Llagostera) and three in Pla de l'Estany (Crespià, Esponellà and Vilademuls), all within the province of Girona. Olives must be grown and the product processed solely within this area. The permitted varieties are Argudell, Curivell, Llei de Cadaqués and Arbequina; Argudell must constitute a minimum of 51 % of the oil in the mixture, and the combined share of Argudell and Arbequina must exceed 95 %. The specification defines physico-chemical parameters for oleic, linoleic and palmitic acid content, and requires a Rancimat stability value averaging 9 hours at 120 °C, with a minimum of 6 hours. Organoleptic requirements include an absence of defects, a greenly fruity aroma of medium or medium-strong intensity, and medium bitterness and pungency. Packaging for retail sale must be in containers of up to 5 litres. The control body is the Consejo Regulador de la DOP Aceite de l'Empordà, based in Figueres, Girona. Labelling must display the name 'Oli de l'Empordà' or 'Aceite de L'Empordà' together with the words 'Denominación de Origen Protegida'.
