About this designation
Les Garrigues is a protected designation of origin for virgin olive oil, registered under file number PDO-ES-0070 and granted EU protection on 21 June 1996. The geographical area covers municipal territories in the districts of Les Garrigues, El Segrià, and L'Urgell in the south-east of the province of Lérida. A specification amendment registered by Commission Regulation (EC) No 1902/2004 extended the geographical area to include additional municipalities in Les Garrigues and El Segrià. The permitted olive varieties are Arbequina and Verdiell; no other varieties are authorised. The specification requires acidity below 0.5 degrees, a peroxide number not exceeding 15, and humidity below 0.1 percent. Oil must be extracted from healthy, clean olives using techniques that do not detract from the product's characteristics, and extraction must take place in plants registered with and supervised by the Consejo Regulador de la DOP Les Garrigues. The soil link described in the specification is loose limey soil, clayey-loamy in texture and reddish-ochre in colour, under a continental climate. Authenticity is confirmed by numbered back-labels issued by the Consejo Regulador, and labels must read Denominación de Origen 'Les Garrigues' aceite virgen. The Consejo Regulador also acts as the inspection body and meets the requirements of standard EN 45011.
