Also known as: Poniente de Granada
Poniente de Granada is a PDO covering extra virgin olive oil produced in the western part of the province of Granada, Spain. The oil must be obtained from six permitted olive varieties — Picudo, Picual or Marteño, Hojiblanca, Lucio, Nevadillo de Alhama de Granada, and Loaime — grown and processed within a defined area of sixteen named townships.
About this designation
Registered as a PDO on 5 November 2005 under file number PDO-ES-0273 (eAmbrosia identifier EUGI00000013618), Poniente de Granada designates extra virgin olive oil produced exclusively within sixteen named townships in the western province of Granada, including Loja, Montefrío, Íllora, Alhama de Granada, and Algarinejo, among others. The processing and packaging area is identical to the production area. Only oil of the extra virgin class is eligible for certification. The permitted olive varieties are Picudo, Picual or Marteño, Hojiblanca, Lucio, Nevadillo de Alhama de Granada, and Loaime. The specification sets maximum permissible analytical values: a peroxide value of 15 meq of active oxygen per kg of oil, an ultraviolet absorbency (K270) of 0.15, humidity of 0.2 % for unfiltered oils and 0.1 % for filtered oils, and impurities of 0.1 %; the minimum organoleptic panel-test score is 6.5. Pressing must be completed no more than 48 hours after picking, and the churning temperature of the paste may not exceed 33 °C. The only authorised adjuvant is approved food talc at a maximum dose of 2.5 %. Oils obtained from the second centrifugation of the paste (aceites de repaso) may not be certified under the designation. Authenticity is guaranteed by a numbered back label issued by the Consejo Regulador de la denominación de origen «Poniente de Granada», which also oversees the monitoring plan covering all stages through to certification.
