About this designation
Priego de Córdoba is a protected designation of origin for extra virgin olive oil produced exclusively from Picudo, Hojiblanca and Picual olives. The production area is a comarca natural in the south-east of the province of Córdoba, situated within the Sierras Subbéticas Natural Park, and comprises the municipalities of Almedinilla, Carcabuey, Fuente Tójar and Priego de Córdoba. Both the cultivation of the olives and the extraction of the oil must take place within this defined area. The specification establishes three product types: 'Picudo', in which the Picudo variety accounts for over 50 % of the olives used; 'Hojiblanco', in which the Hojiblanca variety accounts for over 50 %; and 'Picual', in which the Picual variety accounts for over 50 %. For the Picudo and Hojiblanco types, acidity may not exceed 0,5 %. Across all types, the peroxide value may not exceed 15, K270 may not exceed 0,15, and moisture and impurities must be less than 0,1 %. Every package must carry a guarantee seal, label or numbered certification label issued by the Consejo Regulador de la DOP «Priego de Córdoba», affixed at the mill or packaging plant in a manner that prevents removal and re-attachment. Labels must be approved by the Regulatory Board before use. The designation was registered at EU level on 24 December 1998 and is recorded in the eAmbrosia database under identifier EUGI00000013450.
