Arroz de Calasparra
Also known as: Calasparra rice, Bomba de Calasparra
Arroz de Calasparra is a protected designation covering rice of the varieties Bomba and Balilla x Sollana, grown on alluvial land along the rivers Segura and Mundo in the municipalities of Calasparra and Moratalla in Murcia and Hellín in Albacete. The specification classifies the rice as Extra and Class I. The designation is registered under file number PDO-ES-0073.
About this designation
Registered as a PDO on 21 June 1996 under file number PDO-ES-0073 (eAmbrosia identifier EUGI00000013040), Arroz de Calasparra covers rice produced from two authorised varieties: Bomba and Balilla x Sollana. The geographical area is defined as land in the municipalities of Calasparra and Moratalla in Murcia, and Hellín in Albacete, situated on the banks of the rivers Segura and Mundo. The specification requires that rice be grown on qualifying and duly registered land within this production area, and that processing, packaging and labelling take place in registered factories also within the production area. Authorised varieties must be grown under set conditions and carefully harvested, cleaned, selected and packaged at origin. The specification attributes the local character of the white and brown rice produced here to the alluvial land between the rivers Segura and Mundo, the quality of the irrigation water, the altitude of the area, and the relatively cold climate. The rice is classified as Extra and Class I. Labels must be authorised by the Consejo Regulador de la Denominación de Origen Protegida Calasparra, and the designation name Denominación de Origen Calasparra must figure prominently on them. Numbered labels certifying the designation are issued by the Consejo Regulador. Where rice is grown using organic production methods, this may be stated on the label.
