Avellana de Reus

Avellana de Reus is a PDO covering hazelnuts of five native varieties — Negreta, Pauetet, Gironella, Morella and Culplana — grown and processed in a defined area of the province of Tarragona, Catalonia. The designation covers hazelnuts in shell and shelled whole kernels, each in raw or roasted form, subject to mandatory size and quality tolerances.

About this designation

Registered under file number PDO-ES-0046, Avellana de Reus received EU protection on 6 June 1998 and is administered by the Consejo Regulador de la DOP Avellana de Reus. The geographical area is confined to the province of Tarragona in southern Catalonia, encompassing all municipalities in the districts of Alt Camp, Baix Camp, Tarragonès, Priorat, Conca de Barberà and Terra Alta. The specification permits only five varieties: Negreta, Pauetet, Gironella, Morella and Culplana, all native to the area. Both production of hazelnuts and processing must take place within the defined geographical area. Processing always includes cleaning, classification and extrinsic quality control; depending on the final format it also includes shelling and roasting. Hazelnuts in shell must reach a minimum diameter or particle size of 16 mm for the large grade and 18 mm for the very large grade; shelled whole kernels must reach a minimum of 11 mm. Packing into large containers must take place within the defined area to ensure traceability. Packaging must display the PDO name 'Avellana de Reus', the term 'Denominación de Origen Protegida' or 'DOP', the PDO's own logo, and a code approved by the Consejo Regulador. The eAmbrosia identifier for this designation is EUGI00000013443.
