Faba Asturiana
Also known as: Faba de Asturias
Faba Asturiana is a PGI covering dried beans of the Granja Asturiana variety, grown, harvested, cleaned, selected, classified, and packaged within the Autonomous Community of the Principality of Asturias. The designation requires that cultivation takes place on registered holdings and that all processing and packaging occur within the production area under the supervision of the Consejo Regulador IGP Faba Asturiana.
About this designation
Registered as a PGI on 21 June 1996 under file number PGI-ES-0100, with eAmbrosia identifier EUGI00000012975, Faba Asturiana covers dried beans exclusively of the Granja Asturiana variety. The protected geographical area is defined as lands within the Autonomous Community of the Principality of Asturias, situated in the north of the Iberian Peninsula between the Autonomous Communities of Cantabria and Galicia. The specification permits no variety other than Granja Asturiana. Beans must be cultivated on registered holdings, and harvesting, cleaning, and selection are carried out under the control of the Regulating Body. Cleaning, selection, classification, and packaging must all take place at origin, within the production area, in registered factories. The product is marketed in two quality classes: Extra and Class I. The link between the product and its geographical area is attributed to the brown soils on well-drained river terraces, which are low in calcium carbonate, and to temperatures in the range of 20 to 30 degrees Celsius combined with high relative humidity. Suitable cultivation, harvesting, and production techniques are subject to inspection. The applicant and control body is the Consejo Regulador IGP Faba Asturiana, based in Oviedo.
