About this designation
Registered as a PGI on 5 July 2005 under file number PGI-ES-0480 (eAmbrosia identifier EUGI00000013780), Faba de Lourenzá covers dried beans of the Faba Galaica variety, an Andean cultivar of Phaseolus vulgaris L. of the Fabaceae family, grown, prepared and packed within the defined area. The geographical area comprises the coastal territory of the province of Lugo known as A Mariña Luguesa, encompassing three administrative districts — A Mariña Occidental, A Mariña Central and A Mariña Oriental — and fifteen named municipalities including Lourenzá, Mondoñedo, Ribadeo and Viveiro. Seeds must be certified, approved seeds produced by the same grower, or seeds from other fields listed in the inspection body's register. Sowing takes place from May to June at a depth of 2 to 5 cm. Harvest runs from the end of August to the end of November. Before packing, beans are cleaned, sifted, sorted and treated against weevils in refrigerated chambers at minus 20 °C or less for at least 48 hours; no chemical preservatives are used. Beans are marketed as extra or first class and are normally packed in 0.5 kg and 1 kg packages. Each package must bear the producer's trade mark label and a PGI label issued by the inspection body, the Instituto Galego da Calidade Alimentaria (Ingacal), carrying a sequential alphanumeric code and the official logo of the designation. The specification permits no other variety.
