About this designation
Garbanzo de Escacena was registered as a PGI on 1 February 2012 under file number PGI-ES-0945, with eAmbrosia identifier EUGI00000014029. The designation is administered by the Consejo Regulador de la IGP «Garbanzo de Escacena». The protected product is the fruit of Cicer arietinum L. of the local ecotype Campo de Tejada and of varieties registered under the 'Lechoso' commercial type. Protection covers only chickpeas classified in the 'Extra' category, sold packaged as dry legumes; bulk marketing under the protected name is not permitted. Packages may not exceed 5 kg. The specification sets minimum physical requirements: seeds must be a very pale yellowish-white, long and flattened in shape with deep grooves and surface irregularities, with a minimum size of 8 mm, and a minimum weight of 490 g per 1 000 chickpeas. No more than 4 % of chickpeas in a batch may fall below the minimum size, and no more than 2 % may fail to meet the colour and shape requirements. Chickpeas are treated against dried bean beetles within the first 30 days after harvest if not treated in the warehouse. Dried chickpeas may not be marketed more than 2.5 years after harvest. Labels issued by the Regulatory Board must be affixed to each package, and each label must bear the designation 'Garbanzo de Escacena' together with the PGI logo. The production area is confined to the El Campo de Tejada zone, covering municipalities in the provinces of Huelva and Seville, where vertisol topoform soils known locally as tierras negras, barros, or tierras de bujeo are found.
