Miel de Galicia
Also known as: Mel de Galicia, Galician honey
Miel de Galicia or Mel de Galicia is honey produced, processed, and packaged within the Autonomous Community of Galicia, Spain. The designation covers multifloral honey and four monofloral varieties — eucalyptus, chestnut, blackberry, and heather — each subject to defined pollen thresholds and physicochemical limits, and certified by the CR de la IGP Miel de Galicia.
About this designation
Registered as a PGI under file number PGI-ES-0278, with EU protection dating from 5 February 2005 and formalised by Commission Regulation (EC) No 868/2007 of 23 July 2007, Miel de Galicia or Mel de Galicia covers honey whose entire production chain — beekeeping, extraction, storage, and packaging — must take place within the Autonomous Community of Galicia. The honey is produced in hives with moveable panels and obtained by decanting or centrifuging; it may be liquid, crystallised, or creamy, or in the form of honeycombs. Five categories are recognised: multifloral honey, and monofloral honeys from eucalyptus, chestnut, blackberry, and heather. Physicochemical requirements include a maximum water content of 18.5%, a minimum diastase activity of 9 on the Schade scale (or a minimum of 4 for honeys with low enzyme content, provided hydroxymethylfurfural does not exceed 10 mg/kg), and a maximum hydroxymethylfurfural content of 28 mg/kg. Pollen thresholds for monofloral varieties require a minimum of 70% eucalyptus pollen for eucalyptus honey, 70% chestnut pollen for chestnut honey, 45% blackberry pollen for blackberry honey, and 45% heather pollen for heather honey. The pollen combination Helianthus annuus–Olea europaea–Cistus ladanifer must not exceed 5% of the total pollen spectrum in any category. The regulatory body, CR de la IGP Miel de Galicia, maintains registers of holdings and of extraction, storage, and packaging installations, and certifies honey on a batch basis following analytical, organoleptic, and documentary checks. The eAmbrosia identifier is EUGI00000013623.
