Pimiento de Fresno-Benavente

Pimiento de Fresno-Benavente is a fresh sweet pepper of the 'morro de vaca' or 'morrón' type, grown in irrigated river-valley municipalities across León, Zamora, and one municipality in Valladolid. At maturity the fruit is red, rectangular, with a minimum width of 10 centimetres, flesh thicker than 8 millimetres, and a unit weight exceeding 300 grams, with 3 to 5 lobes.

Registered as a PGI on 19 June 2008 under file number PGI-ES-0705 (eAmbrosia identifier EUGI00000014002), Pimiento de Fresno-Benavente covers fresh sweet peppers of the species Capsicum annuum L., specifically of the 'morro de vaca' or 'morrón' types. The geographical area spans 33 municipalities in the south-east of the province of León, 55 municipalities in the north of the province of Zamora, and one municipality in the province of Valladolid, covering an area of broad irrigated valleys of 2 769 km². The area lies at an average altitude of 756 metres above sea level. Soils in registered parcels must contain more than 15 % clay, less than 33 % alluvium, and less than 2,1 % organic matter. Maximum planting density is 85 000 plants per hectare, and sweet peppers may not be grown on the same parcel in two consecutive years. Moisture content of the fruit must exceed 90 %, potassium must be less than 3 g/100 g, and unit weight must exceed 300 g. After harvest, peppers must be sheltered from the sun in cool or well-ventilated places. Packages must carry the terms 'Indicación Geográfica Protegida' and 'Pimiento de Fresno-Benavente', together with a non-reusable secondary label bearing an alphanumeric code that guarantees traceability. In packages containing more than six peppers, a sticker with the designation's logo must be affixed to each individual fruit. The Consejo Regulador IGP Pimiento de Fresno-Benavente is the applicant and producer group responsible for the designation.
