Pimiento de Gernika
Also known as: Gernikako Piperra
Pimiento de Gernika, also registered as Gernikako Piperra, is a PGI-protected fresh frying pepper from the Gernika zone of Bizkaia, Spain, registered under file number PGI-ES-0673 with EU protection dating from 31 January 2008 (eAmbrosia: EUGI00000013822). The designation covers fruits of Capsicum annuum L. belonging to the local Gernika cultivar, harvested unripe with thin flesh and a medium to elongated triangular shape.
Tasting notes
Basque green pepper IGP from Gernika, small elongated pale-green pepper, distinctive non-spicy mild variety. Traditional preparation fried in olive oil for tapas service.

The pepper is harvested in its unripe state and is primarily intended for frying fresh, a method the specification identifies as the most popular form of consumption.
