Plátano de Canarias

Plátano de Canarias is a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI-ES-0867) registered on 11 March 2011, covering fresh bananas of the Cavendish variety of the species Musa acuminata Colla (AAA) grown in the Canary Islands, Spain. Mandatory grading is applied on the basis of length and thickness. A distinguishing physical feature is the brown flecks that appear on the skin as the fruit ripens.

Tasting notes

Canarian banana IGP, distinctive smaller-than-Caribbean variety with characteristic black-spotted thin skin when ripe. Very sweet flavor, soft creamy flesh — Spain's iconic banana, exported continentally.

The specification states that the bananas are grown to be eaten fresh after selection and packing.
