About this designation
Registered as a PDO under file number PDO-FR-0140, with EU protection dating from 21 June 1996, Chasselas de Moissac is reserved for a fresh or long-life table grape produced exclusively from the chasselas B variety, whose clonal selection was initiated in 1956 by technicians from the French National Institute for Agronomic Research (INRA) working with local producers. The geographical area comprises 76 municipalities across the departments of Tarn-et-Garonne and Lot, including the cantons of Bourg-de-Visa, Lafrançaise, Lauzerte, Moissac, Molières and Montpezat-de-Quercy, together with named municipalities in both departments. All grape production operations must take place within this area. The specification requires that bunches have a minimum length of 12 cm and a minimum weight of 100 g, that grapes be perfectly healthy with bloom preserved, seeds discernible against the light, and stems turgescent. The sugar content must be at or above 17,2 degrees Brix and the sugar to acidity ratio must be above 25. Grapes that are deformed, insufficiently ripe, rotting, or diseased are excluded. Packaging is carried out manually in bunch cutting and packaging workshops within the geographical area, with working spaces lit to at least 500 lux. When a package exceeds 800 g, bunches are presented in a single layer in trays holding a maximum of 8 kg. Individual package labelling must include the name 'Chasselas de Moissac' in characters at least equal in size to the largest characters used, the producer's name, and the designation's identification and traceability system. The applicant group is the Syndicat de défense du Chasselas de Moissac AOC, based in Moissac.
