Miel d'Alsace

Miel d'Alsace is honey produced from hives installed in Alsace, France, covering six distinct types: silver fir, chestnut, acacia, lime, forest, and multi-flower. Each type is defined by its own physico-chemical and organoleptic criteria set out in the specification. The designation was registered as a PGI under file number PGI-FR-0150, with EU protection dating from 20 March 2002.

About this designation

Miel d'Alsace is registered as a PGI in the EU register under eAmbrosia identifier EUGI00000013596 and file number PGI-FR-0150, with protection effective from 20 March 2002 pursuant to Commission Regulation (EC) No 736/2005. The designation covers six honey types: silver fir, chestnut, acacia, lime, forest, and multi-flower. Production hives must be installed in Alsace. For silver fir honey, the perimeter is further limited to the Alsatian slopes of the Vosges and Jura mountain ranges. Chestnut honey is gathered in the hills south of the Vosges, in the forests of Brumath and Haguenau in Lower Rhine and Upper Rhine. Lime honey comes from the forests of Hardt in Upper Rhine. Honey is extracted when ripe without heating, then decanted, stored, and packaged. Each batch is subjected to physico-chemical and sensory analysis. Proof of origin is verified through microscopic analysis of 30% of all Miel d'Alsace production, by designation, and through records of labels checked against harvest declarations and stocks. The inspection body is Certiqual, based in Schiltigheim. Labels must carry the words Miel d'Alsace together with a reference to the specific honey type. The applicant group is the Confédération régionale des apiculteurs d'Alsace.
