Mirabelles de Lorraine
Also known as: Mirabelle
Mirabelles de Lorraine is a PGI covering fresh and deep-frozen mirabelle plums grown exclusively in the Meuse, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Moselle and Vosges départements of Lorraine, France. The designation is restricted to clones of two registered varieties, 'Mirabelles de Nancy' and 'Mirabelles de Metz', and requires fruit of more than 22 mm in diameter meeting defined minimum sugar and colour standards.
About this designation
Registered as a PGI on 21 June 1996 under file number PGI-FR-0194 (eAmbrosia identifier EUGI00000013210), Mirabelles de Lorraine covers round, yellow or golden mirabelle plums produced from clones of the 'Mirabelles de Nancy' and 'Mirabelles de Metz' varieties, both registered in 1961 under catalogue numbers 91 291 and 91 290 respectively, belonging to the Rosaceae family, species Prunus Insistitia. The geographical area is defined as all municipalities in the four départements of Meuse, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Moselle and Vosges. Fruit must exceed 22 mm in diameter, reach a minimum average sugar content of 16° Brix for direct consumption or 15° Brix for processing (crushing method), and attain at least colour 4 on the AREFE colour scale. Planting density in orchards may not exceed 400 trees per hectare. The specification requires that all production, sorting, sizing and packaging of fresh fruit take place within the geographical area; for deep-frozen fruit, production, sorting, sizing, stoning and deep-freezing must also occur within the area. The product is presented fresh or deep-frozen — whole with stone in, whole with stone removed, or in halves with stone removed. Each package of fruit for direct consumption or pallet of fruit for processing must carry a unique traceability code. Labelling must include the name 'Mirabelles de Lorraine', the name and address of the certifying group, and the term 'PGI' and/or the Community logo. Lorraine accounts for 70 to 80 % of France's production of fresh mirabelles.
