Mogette de Vendée

Also known as: Vendée white bean

Mogette de Vendée is a white bean of the species Phaseolus vulgaris, ingot type, grown within a defined area of the Vendée department of France. The designation covers dry, semi-dry deep-frozen, sterilised, and pasteurised forms. Varieties are selected annually by the inter-branch organisation from the official varieties catalogue against criteria specific to the traditional product.

About this designation

Registered as a PGI on 27 March 2006 under file number PGI-FR-0541 (eAmbrosia identifier EUGI00000013925), Mogette de Vendée designates a white bean of the species Phaseolus vulgaris of the ingot type, characterised by a regular, elliptical wide kidney shape between 1 and 2 cm long, with little or no striation and a rectangular, often flat end. The dry bean must have a moisture content of between 10 and 16 %. The specification permits four forms of presentation: dry, semi-dry deep-frozen, cooked and sterilised in jars, and cooked and pasteurised in sealed trays or small bags. Bulk sales direct to the consumer are not permitted. All packaged batches must be homogeneous, identified, and numbered, with traceability records covering date of packaging, batch numbers, delivery numbers, and corresponding quantities. Beans must be grown within the delimited geographical area, which covers all districts of the Vendée department fully and several districts partly, including specified municipalities within Challans, Luçon, Maillezais, Moutiers les Mauxfaits, and Saint Gilles Croix de Vie. Seed varieties are selected annually by the Mogette de Vendée inter-branch organisation from the official varieties catalogue. The specification requires dwarf-crop varieties with an annual growing cycle, good disease-resistance, and consistent flowering. The link to the geographical area rests on the quality and long-established reputation of the product and the local know-how of producers.
