Oignon de Roscoff

Oignon de Roscoff is a long-keeping pink onion grown in the Roscoff region of Finistère, Brittany. Produced from farm seeds or certified Jack and Kéravel varieties, it is distinguished by its rosy to rosy-coppery external tunics, white to lightly rosy internal scales with a rosy-coloured edge, a diameter of between 30 mm and 80 mm, and a dry matter content of between 9 % and 13 %. Anti-germinating treatments are prohibited.

Registered as a PDO on 25 June 2010 under file number PDO-FR-0812 (eAmbrosia identifier EUGI00000014030), Oignon de Roscoff designates a long-keeping onion of the species Allium cepa produced within a defined geographical area in the Roscoff region of Finistère, France. The specification permits production only from farm seeds meeting defined variety requirements or from certified seeds of the Jack and Kéravel varieties. Bulbs must measure between 30 mm and 80 mm in diameter, with a shape ranging from round and elongated to round and flattened. The tail must be solidly fixed to the bulb by the neck and measure at least 5 cm. The dry matter content of the bulb must fall between 9 % and 13 %. All operations from seed and seedling production through cultivation and drying must take place within the geographical area. The onion must be stored in bulk within the geographical area before packaging, and packaging itself must also occur within the geographical area. Anti-germinating treatments are prohibited. The end of marketing date is 1 May of the year following the harvest. The product is presented as braids with a penn kapiten onion at the end, in containers weighing not more than 6 kg with a tamper-proof closing system, or in rigid containers weighing not more than 12 kg.
