Pruneau d'Agen
Also known as: Prune d'Ente, Agen prune
Pruneaux d'Agen are dried prunes produced from cultivars of the Prune d'Ente variety, harvested at optimal ripeness, and obtained without adding sweeteners. The designation covers two categories: prunes intended for direct sale to consumers and prunes intended for subsequent food processing, each subject to distinct size and moisture requirements set out in the product specification.
About this designation
Pruneaux d'Agen holds PGI status under file number PGI-FR-0149, with EU protection dating from 20 February 2002. The specification, as amended following a non-minor amendment application published on 29 January 2019, restricts production to cultivars of the Prune d'Ente variety in the strict sense of the term, explicitly excluding hybrids of any other variety. The fruit must be harvested at optimal ripeness, and the finished product must be obtained without adding sweeteners. Sun drying is not practised. The designation distinguishes between prunes eaten fresh, intended for sale to consumers, and prunes intended for subsequent food processing. Prunes eaten fresh must have a size of at most 66 fruit per 500 g with a moisture content of 35 %; they may be sold whole or pitted, with size measured before removal of the pit in the case of pitted prunes. Prunes intended for food processing must have a size of at most 98 fruit per 500 g when non-hydrated and with a moisture content of 21 %; they may not have any very serious defects, must be at least partially intact, and are broken down before dispatch to another agri-food processing undertaking. These prunes are not intended for sale to the final consumer. Prunes marketed with the reference 'semi-dried' are characterised solely by a lower degree of drying and are obtained without subsequent rehydration. The applicant group is the Syndicat du Pruneau d'Agen, based in Villeneuve-sur-Lot, comprising plum producers, dryers, and processing undertakings.
