Aglio di Voghiera

Also known as: Voghiera garlic

Aglio di Voghiera is a garlic ecotype grown exclusively in five municipalities of the Province of Ferrara, Italy. It is characterised by uniform luminescent white bulbs with tightly compacted cloves and, according to the specification, notable keeping qualities. Only bulbs meeting Extra class or Class I size standards may carry the designation.

About this designation

Aglio di Voghiera received PDO protection on 30 July 2007 under file number PDO-IT-0638 (eAmbrosia identifier EUGI00000013896). The production area is confined to the municipalities of Voghiera, Masi Torello, Portomaggiore, Argenta and Ferrara, all within the Province of Ferrara. All production operations, from cultivation through to packaging, must be carried out within this defined area. The designation covers a single garlic ecotype whose specific genetic identity has been demonstrated through DNA amplification techniques and is the result of vegetative propagation using selected cloves from previous harvests. Only Extra class garlic with a minimum diameter of 45 mm or Class I garlic with a minimum diameter of 40 mm may be recognised under the designation. The product is released in three forms — fresh/green, semi-dry and dry — each defined by the condition of the stalk, outer skin and roots at the time of marketing. Permitted packaging formats include braids of 5 to 18 bulbs, extra-large braids of 8 to 80 bulbs, nets of 100 to 500 g, bags of 1 to 5 kg, small braids of 3 to 5 bulbs, and individual bulbs of 50 to 100 g. All packaging must display the name 'Aglio di Voghiera', the words 'denominazione di origine protetta' or the acronym DOP, the Community logo, and a circular logo depicting a garlic clove set within the curve of the letter V on a light blue background.
