About this designation
Registered as a PDO on 29 December 2006 under file number PDO-IT-0338 (eAmbrosia identifier EUGI00000013707), Asparago Bianco di Bassano covers shoots of Asparagus officinalis L. grown solely from the local ecotype 'Comune — o Chiaro — di Bassano' within a production and packing area comprising specified municipalities of Vicenza province near Bassano del Grappa. The specification permits no other ecotype. Soils must have a pH between 5.5 and 7.5, confirmed by analysis prior to each new planting and repeated at least every five years for the principal parameters. Row spacing may not fall below 1.8 metres for twin rows or 2 metres for single rows, and maximum planting density may not exceed 1.8 plants per square metre. At least 50 % of nitrogen applied must be of organic origin, and annual additions of principal nutrients per hectare may not exceed 150 units of nitrogen, 80 of phosphorous, and 180 of potassium. Maximum full production is 80 quintals per hectare. Harvesting runs from 1 March to 15 June; under protected cultivation, and with prior approval of the control body, it may begin as early as 1 February. Preparation and packing must take place within the defined production area. Each bundle must be bound with a 'stroppa' — a young willow branch or aftershoot — and bear a label showing the PDO mark and a bundle identification number for traceability. The inspection body is CSQA S.r.l., Thiene (VI), operating under standard EN 45011. The applicant group is the Consorzio per la Tutela dell'Asparago Bianco di Bassano DOP.
