Asparago di Badoere

Asparago di Badoere is a PGI-protected asparagus produced in a defined area spanning parts of the Provinces of Padua, Treviso, and Venice. It is grown in two types — white and green — from specified varieties of Asparagus officinalis, and must be both grown and packaged within the production area before release for consumption.

About this designation

Asparago di Badoere received PGI protection on 21 September 2005 under file number PGI-IT-0495 (eAmbrosia identifier EUGI00000013804). The designation covers white and green asparagus grown from plants of the Liliacee family, genus Asparagus, species Officinalis. Permitted varieties for white asparagus are 'Dariana', 'Thielim', 'Zeno', 'Avalim', and 'Grolim'; permitted varieties for green asparagus are 'Eros', 'Thielim', 'Grolim', 'Dariana', and 'Avalim'. The production area comprises the municipalities of Piombino Dese and Trebaseleghe in the Province of Padua; Casale sul Sile, Casier, Istrana, Mogliano Veneto, Morgano, Paese, Preganziol, Quinto di Treviso, Resana, Treviso, Vedelago, and Zero Branco in the Province of Treviso; and Scorzè in the Province of Venice. Crowns must be planted between 1 February and 30 June at a maximum planting density of 22 000 plants per hectare. No shoots may be harvested for at least 18 months from the date of planting. Harvesting takes place between 1 February and 31 May each year, and the maximum yield after cleaning may not exceed 7 000 kg per hectare. The product is released in Extra Class and Class I grades, each with specified diameter and length ranges. A seal of guarantee bearing the 'Asparago di Badoere' PGI logo must be affixed to each bundle or package so that it is broken upon opening. The inspection body is CSQA Certificazioni srl, Thiene.
