Registered as a PDO under file number PDO-IT-0499, with EU protection dating from 28 September 2005 and eAmbrosia identifier EUGI00000013669, Colline Pontine is an extra virgin olive oil whose production area covers twenty-five named municipalities in the Province of Latina, Region of Lazio: Aprilia, Bassiano, Campodimele, Castelforte, Cisterna di Latina, Cori, Fondi, Formia, Itri, Lenola, Maenza, Minturno, Monte San Biagio, Norma, Priverno, Prossedi, Roccagorga, Rocca Massima, Roccasecca dei Volsci, Santi Cosma e Damiano, Sermoneta, Sezze, Sonnino, Spigno Saturnia and Terracina. The specification requires that the oil be obtained from Itrana olives at between 50 % and 100 %, Frantoio and Leccino up to 50 %, and other varieties up to a maximum of 10 %. Chemical requirements include total acidity expressed as oleic acid of no more than 0,6 grams per 100 grams, a peroxide index of no more than 12, a polyphenol value greater than 100 mg/kg, and oleic acid content of no less than 72 %. The organoleptic profile specifies a fruity olive aroma with median values for fruity flavour of olives between 4 and 7, bitterness between 3 and 5, pungency between 3 and 5, and tomato between 3 and 6, with a defect median of 0. The harvest of Itrana olives may begin in November and extend through to 31 January of the following year. The designated inspection body is 3A-PTA, based in Todi. Labelling must display the name Colline Pontine in indelible capital letters larger than all other text, with the words 'D.O.P. denominazione d'origine protetta' immediately below, and must include the harvest year on the front label.
