🇮🇹PDOOlive Oil
Colline Teatine
Also known as: Chieti DOP
Colline Teatine is a PDO-protected extra virgin olive oil produced within the province of Chieti in Abruzzo. The predominant variety is Gentile di Chieti, a native cultivar. The specification permits two additional geographical indications, Colline Teatine Frentano and Colline Teatine Vastese, for oils from those more narrowly defined sub-zones within the same province.
About this designation
Registered as a PDO on 25 November 1997 under file number PDO-IT-1541 (eAmbrosia identifier EUGI00000013325), Colline Teatine designates extra virgin olive oil whose production area is confined to the province of Chieti. The applicant group was the Associazioni olivicole c/o A.P.O.C. Chieti, and the competent national authority was the Ministero delle Risorse Agricole, Alimentari e Forestali. The predominant olive variety is Gentile di Chieti, described in the specification as a native cultivar present throughout the oils of the region. Olives must be harvested directly from the tree between 20 October and 20 December of each year. The per-hectare yield of olives may not exceed 9,000 kg/ha in specialised olive groves, with a maximum oil yield of 22%. Only physical and mechanical extraction methods are permitted. The oil must meet the following chemical thresholds: maximum acidity of 0.60%, peroxides below 15 Meq O2/kg, and polyphenols above 100 ppm. Colour ranges from green to yellow; the specification describes the aroma as faintly to intensely fruity and the flavour as fruity. The specification provides for two additional geographical indications, Colline Teatine Frentano and Colline Teatine Vastese, recognising slight organoleptic differences in those sub-zones. Control is exercised by the Ministero delle Risorse Agricole Alimentari e Forestali, Ispettorato Centrale Repressione Frodi, Rome.
