Ficodindia dell'Etna

Also known as: Fichi d'India dell'Etna, Etna prickly pear

Ficodindia dell'Etna is a PDO-protected prickly pear fruit registered under file number PDO-IT-0241, granted EU protection on 12 November 2002. It covers fruits of Opuntia ficus-indica grown on the slopes of Etna, in named municipalities, at altitudes between 150 and 750 metres above sea level. Three cultivars are recognised: Gialla, Rossa, and Bianca, with up to 5% of other ecotypes permitted.

Tasting notes

Sicilian prickly pear from Etna area, three varieties (Surfarina/yellow, Sanguigna/red, Muscaredda/white). Bright color, sweet juicy flesh with characteristic small seeds, refreshing flavor; second harvest "scozzolatura" produces premium late-season fruit.

HoReCa use

Fresh fruit dessert (peeled tableside), juice, sorbet, granita, jam, ingredient in Sicilian dolci.
