Ficodindia di San Cono is a PDO-protected fresh prickly pear registered under file number PDO-IT-0647, granted EU protection on 26 September 2007. It covers fruits of the Opuntia ficus-indica species, limited to the cultivars 'Surfarina', 'Sanguigna', and 'Muscaredda', grown in the territory of San Cono, Catania, Sicily. Each fruit must weigh more than 105 g and achieve a refractometric rating of not less than 14 %.
Tasting notes
Sicilian prickly pear from San Cono (Catania province). Similar varieties to Etna DOP, large fruit with intense color and sweet juicy flesh.
HoReCa use
Same as Etna prickly pear — fresh, juice, sorbet, jam.
