Limone Costa d'Amalfi

Also known as: Sfusato Amalfitano, Amalfi lemon

Limone Costa d'Amalfi is a PGI-protected lemon grown on the Amalfi coast in the province of Salerno, Campania, produced exclusively from the Sfusato Amalfitano cultivar. The fruit is characterised by an elongated oval shape, a large pointed umbo, a medium-thick lemon-yellow peel rich in essential oils, a strong aroma, juice yield of not less than 25 %, and acidity of not less than 3,5 g/100 ml.

About this designation

Limone Costa d'Amalfi received PGI protection on 5 October 2000 and is registered under file number PGI-IT-0116 (eAmbrosia identifier EUGI00000013569). The designation covers lemons of the Sfusato Amalfitano cultivar grown and harvested within a delimited area in the province of Salerno, comprising the entire territory of the municipality of Atrani and parts of the territories of Amalfi, Cetara, Conca dei Marini, Furore, Maiori, Minori, Positano, Praiano, Ravello, Scala, Tramonti and Vietri sul Mare — the area internationally known as the Amalfi coast. Every stage from growing to harvesting must take place within this geographical area. The specification requires that each fruit weighs not less than 100 g, that juice yield is not less than 25 %, and that acidity is not less than 3,5 g/100 ml; the flesh is straw yellow with a low number of pips. The traditional production method requires growing trees under trellises made of posts not less than 180 cm long at the time of replacement, preferably chestnut and/or other materials compatible with environmental and countryside protection, with coverings used where necessary to protect trees from adverse weather and to ensure gradual fruit ripening. The product must be sold in rigid containers, from a single lemon up to 15 kg, made preferably from material of plant origin; rigid cardboard containers are also permissible. Labels must bear the protected name, the producer's name, the quantity, the year of production, and the designated logo. The applicant group is the Consorzio di Tutela Limone Costa di Amalfi IGP.
