Registered under file number PDO-IT-0199 and protected as a PDO, Lucca designates extra virgin olive oil whose olives must be produced and processed within a defined geographical area of Lucca province, Tuscany. The production area is divided into three zones: the Piana di Lucca, comprising the municipalities of Capannori, Lucca, Montecarlo, Altopascio, Porcari and Villa Basilica; the Versilia area, comprising Camaiore, Massarosa, Viareggio, Forte dei Marmi, Pietrasanta, Seravezza and Stazzema; and the Media Valle and Garfagnana area, comprising Bagni di Lucca, Borgo a Mozzano, Pescaglia, Barga, Coreglia Antelminelli and Minucciano. The permitted olive varieties are Frantoio or Frantoiano or Frantoiana up to 90 %, Leccino up to 30 %, and others up to 15 %. When released for consumption, the oil must be yellow to green with hues of varying intensity, and must meet chemical parameters including maximum acidity of 0,5 % expressed in oleic acid, peroxide number not exceeding 12, oleic acid greater than 70, biophenols of at least 100 mg/kg, and tocopherols of at least 90 mg/kg. Bottling must take place within the defined area, and containers may not exceed 5 litres. Labels must carry the name followed by the words 'Denominazione di Origine Protetta' and the designation's specific logo, reproduced at its actual size of 2 × 2 cm on bottles and containers.

Tasting notes

Tuscan EVOO from Lucca province and hills, blend of Frantoio, Leccino, Maurino. Light-medium fruity intensity, well-balanced harmonious flavor (less robust than Chianti Classico), sweet character with delicate bitter-pungent finish.

Finishing oil on Tuscan light dishes (fish, vegetables), pairing with farro, raw on bruschetta with salt-free bread.
