Marrone di Roccadaspide

Marrone di Roccadaspide is a PGI-protected chestnut produced from the Anserta, Abate and Castagna Rossa ecotypes, all linked to the Marrone variety, grown at altitudes above 250 metres in designated municipalities of the province of Salerno, Campania. The specification characterises the fruit by a markedly sweet flavour, high sugar content, and a crunchy, not very floury texture.

About this designation

Harvesting takes place in autumn, in no case after the first ten days in November, and for not more than two weeks at a time; it may be performed manually or mechanically, provided the product is not damaged. Fresh fruit must not exceed 85 nuts per kilogram of selected or graded product, and septate nuts may not exceed 5%. Dry unpeeled chestnuts must have a moisture content not exceeding 15%, with a dry chestnut yield not exceeding 50% by weight; defects in peeled dry chestnuts may not be present in more than 20% of nuts. The inspection body is ISMECERT, based in Naples. Packaging must bear the name Marrone di Roccadaspide, the wording Indicazione Geografica Protetta or its acronym I.G.P., and the designated logo.
