About this designation

Marroni del Monfenera is a PGI registered on 8 November 2006 under file number PGI-IT-0563, with eAmbrosia identifier EUGI00000013640. The designation covers fresh chestnuts from the local ecotype of Castanea sativa Mill., var sativa, produced within nineteen named municipalities of Treviso province: Borso del Grappa, Crespano del Grappa, Paderno del Grappa, Possagno, Cavaso del Tomba, Pederobba, San Zenone degli Ezzelini, Fonte, Asolo, Maser, Castelcucco, Monfumo, Cornuda, Montebelluna, Caerano di San Marco, Crocetta del Montello, Volpago del Montello, Giavera del Montello and Nervesa della Battaglia. The specification requires that harvesting, grading, cleaning, sizing and the traditional 'curatura' soaking process all take place within this geographical area. Produce not placed on the market within 48 hours of harvest must undergo 'curatura', which consists of immersing the chestnuts in water at room temperature for a maximum of nine days, followed by drying; this process allows the product to be stored fresh for up to three months. The product may not be released for consumption before 15 September each year. Eligible fruit falls into the Extra category or Category I, defined by specified size thresholds and maximum tolerances for insect damage and pericarp damage. Packaging must be net bags heat sealed or mechanically sewn, in weights of 1 kg, 2 kg, 3 kg, 5 kg or 10 kg. Labels must carry the name 'Marroni del Monfenera' followed by the acronym 'IGP' in characters larger than all other text on the label, together with the EU graphic symbol and the designated logo.
