Mela Alto Adige / Südtiroler Apfel is a PGI registered on 18 January 2005 (file PGI-IT-0207) covering fresh apples of specified varieties grown in 72 municipalities of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano (Alto Adige/Südtirol). Permitted varieties include Braeburn, Elstar, Fuji, Gala, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Idared, Jonagold, Morgenduft, Red Delicious, and Stayman. Orchards range from 200 to 1,100 metres above sea level.
Tasting notes
South-Tyrolean apple, multiple varieties (Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Gala, Fuji, Granny Smith, Pink Lady, Stark Delicious, Renette etc.). Italy's largest apple production zone — characteristic uniform high quality, crisp texture, bright clean flavor profile by variety.
HoReCa use
Fresh fruit, dessert apple in tarts and strudel (Tyrolean classic), salads, with cheese and Speck on antipasto, juice production.
