Miele della Lunigiana PDO covers acacia, chestnut, heather, honeydew and wildflower honeys produced within a defined mountainous area of the province of Massa Carrara, Tuscany. The designation requires that production, processing, preparation and packaging all take place within the delimited geographical area, which corresponds to the Lunigiana Mountain Community.
About this designation
Miele della Lunigiana is registered as a PDO under file number PDO-IT-0195, with EU protection dating from 31 December 2003. A standard amendment approved on 17 March 2026 added heather, honeydew and wildflower honey to the previously recognised acacia and chestnut types. The protected name now applies to five types: acacia honey, defined as produced from flowers of Robinia pseudoacacia; chestnut honey, from flowers of Castanea sativa; heather honey, from flowers of Erica arborea; honeydew honey, produced in spring and summer; and wildflower honey, produced between March and September from mixed flower varieties. The geographical area comprises the municipalities of Pontremoli, Zeri, Mulazzo, Tresana, Podenzana, Aulla, Fosdinovo, Filattiera, Bagnone, Villafranca in Lunigiana, Licciana Nardi, Comano, Fivizzano and Casola in Lunigiana, all in the province of Massa Carrara, covering approximately 97 000 ha. Production, processing, preparation and packaging must all take place within this area. Any artificial feeding must be suspended before frames are inserted and must comprise only sugar and water. Labels must carry the type name followed by 'Miele della Lunigiana', together with the acronym 'DOP' or the full term 'Denominazione di Origine Protetta', and the date of minimum durability, which must not be later than two years from the date of packaging. Tasting notes
Tuscan honey from Lunigiana mountains (Massa-Carrara province), two main varieties — Acacia (very pale gold, delicate vanilla-floral) and Castagno (chestnut, dark amber, bitter-aromatic woody profile). Both produced in Lunigiana valleys.
HoReCa use
Acacia Miele della Lunigiana is used drizzled on cheese, in tea and on yogurt; chestnut Miele della Lunigiana is paired with aged cheeses, used in salad dressings and on roasted meats.
