Nocciola Romana

Also known as: Tonda Gentile Romana, Roman hazelnut

Nocciola Romana is a PDO-protected hazelnut from volcanic hill zones in the provinces of Viterbo and Rome, Lazio. The designation covers fruit of Corylus avellana, principally the cultivars Tonda Gentile Romana and Nocchione, and is distinguished by a mandatory crunchiness and solidity, with no cavities, retained in both fresh and preserved states.

About this designation

Registered as a PDO under file number PDO-IT-0573, with EU protection granted on 28 November 2006 and assigned eAmbrosia identifier EUGI00000013774, Nocciola Romana covers hazelnuts (Corylus avellana) produced within a defined area of municipalities in the provinces of Viterbo and Rome. The cultivars Tonda Gentile Romana and Nocchione must together represent at least 90 % of the selection at the farm; the cultivars Tonda di Giffoni and Barrettona are permitted up to a maximum of 10 %. Hazelnuts in shell of both principal cultivars must fall between 14 and 25 mm in calibre, and the yield after shelling must be between 28 and 50 %. Harvest, storage, sorting, and calibration must all be carried out within the production area. Packaging is strictly specified by format and material, and each package must bear a stamp reading 'NOCCIOLA ROMANA' and 'DENOMINAZIONE DI ORIGINE PROTETTA', the year of harvest, original gross and net weight, and the circular logo depicting the Palazzo dei Papi of Viterbo. The supervisory body is the Consorzio di Tutela della DOP Nocciola Romana, assigned its role by the Italian Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policy. No other name or additional description may appear on the label.
