About this designation

Olio lucano PGI is an extra virgin olive oil whose production area covers the entire region of Basilicata, bounded by the Pollino massif, the Murge hills, the Ofanto river, and the Ionian and Tyrrhenian seas. All stages of production — cultivation, harvesting, and oil extraction — must take place within this area. The oil must be obtained from a defined list of cultivars, including Acerenza, Ogliarola del Vulture (synonyms: Ripolese or Rapollese, Ogliarola di Melfi, Nostrale), Ogliarola del Bradano (synonyms: Comune, Ogliarola), Maiatica (synonyms: oliva di Ferrandina, Pasola), Nociara, Ghiannara, Augellina, Justa, Cornacchiola, Romanella, Carpinegna, Faresana, Sammartinengna, Spinoso, Cannellina, Cima di Melfi, Fasolina, Fasolona, Lardaia, Olivo da mensa, Orazio, Palmarola, Provenzale, Racioppa, Roma, Rotondella, Russulella, Scarpetta, Tarantina, Coratina, Frantoio, and Leccino, used alone or in combination; the total of other varieties may not exceed 20 %. At the time of packaging, acidity expressed as oleic acid must not exceed 0,6 %, and the peroxide value must not exceed 12 mEq O2/kg. Sensory analysis requires an olive fruitiness median of at least 2, bitterness between 2 and 7, and pungency of at least 2. The label must carry the Olio lucano PGI logo, a stylised amphora adorned by four oblique curved lines, together with the designation name in distinct and indelible lettering. The use of other geographical indications on the label is forbidden.
