Patata del Fucino

Patata del Fucino denotes ripe tubers of Solanum tuberosum grown on the former bed of Lake Fucino in the Province of L'Aquila, at 700 metres above sea level. Tubers must measure between 35 mm and 80 mm in diameter, with firm flesh that does not yield to pressure and skin that does not separate from the flesh. The edible part is not less than 95 %.

Registered as a PGI on 21 March 2014 under file number PGI-IT-01217, Patata del Fucino is produced within a growing area bounded by the Circonfucense provincial road and covering parts of the municipalities of Avezzano, Celano, Cerchio, Aielli, Pescina, S. Benedetto dei Marsi, Ortucchio, Trasacco and Luco dei Marsi, all within the Province of L'Aquila. The area corresponds to the drained bed of Lake Fucino, situated at 700 metres above sea level, and is characterised by silty-clayey soil with high levels of organic matter, total nitrogen, assimilable phosphorus and exchangeable potassium. Seed tubers must be varieties registered in the common catalogue of agricultural plant varieties. Planting, growing and harvesting must all take place within the defined geographical area. Tubers are harvested when completely ripe, from the end of July onwards. Chemical requirements per 100 grams of edible part include dry residue of at least 14, starch of at least 8 g, potassium of at least 300 mg and phosphorus of at least 35 mg. After harvest, potatoes must be stored in bins at 4–10 °C with relative humidity of between 88 and 95 %, and may be kept for no longer than 9 months. Packaging formats are specified in the product specification, and all packaging must be sealed so that tubers cannot be removed without breaking it, with the exception of cartons and crates. Labels must carry the name 'Patata del Fucino' together with the abbreviation 'IGP' or the wording 'Indicazione Geografica Protetta', the EU symbol, the variety, and the official product logo. The applicant body is the Consorzio di Tutela IGP Patata del Fucino.
