About this designation
Patata della Sila is a protected geographical indication registered under file number PGI-IT-0643, granted EU protection on 21 September 2007, and recorded in eAmbrosia under identifier EUGI00000013924. The designation covers conservation potatoes of the Solanum tuberosum species in the Solanaceae family, produced from varieties catalogued in the national registers of EU Member States and from certified seed potatoes of Class A or above. A single year of replacement seeding, using seed potatoes reproduced within the defined area, is permitted. The production area is defined exclusively as a named list of municipalities in the Province of Cosenza — including Acri, Celico, San Giovanni in Fiore, and Spezzano della Sila, among others — and municipalities in the Province of Catanzaro, including Decollatura, Serrastretta, Soveria Mannelli, and Taverna, among others, all of which delimit the Altopiano della Sila. Harvesting takes place between 20 August and 30 November. Potatoes must have a minimum dry matter content of 19 % and residue limits for active ingredients of less than 50 % of the limits set by current legislation. Packaging is mandatory before release for consumption; the product may not be sold loose except for individual potatoes marked with the logo. Labels must carry the name 'Patata della Sila' followed by 'Indicazione Geografica Protetta' in full or the abbreviation 'IGP', together with the Community graphic symbol. The Consorzio di Tutela Patata della Sila IGP is the applicant producer group.
