About this designation
Registered as a PDO under file number PDO-IT-0675, with EU protection granted on 15 February 2008 and recorded in the eAmbrosia register under identifier EUGI00000013817, Peperone di Pontecorvo covers fresh pepper fruit produced exclusively from the local ecotype Capiscum annum, type Cornetto di Pontecorvo. All stages of production — from seed and plant propagation through growing and harvesting — must take place within the defined geographical area, which comprises the entire administrative territory of Pontecorvo municipality and specified parts of Esperia, S. Giorgio a Liri, Pignataro Interamna, Villa S. Lucia, Piedimonte S. Germano, Aquino, Castrocielo, Roccasecca and San Giovanni Incarico municipalities, all within the Liri Valley in Frosinone Province. At release for consumption, fruit must be whole and trilobed, red in colour with green veins covering up to 40 % of the surface permitted, and elongated cylindrical or conical in shape. Two quality categories are defined: 'extra', with weight over 150 g and length over 18 cm, and '1st choice', with weight from 100 g to 150 g and length from 14 cm to 18 cm. Packaging must occur within the production area in containers of 200 g, 1 kg up to 10 kg. Each fruit must be marked with the product logo, a stylised depiction of a woman in the traditional Pontecorvo costume known as the 'pacchiana', carrying a basket of peppers. The label must carry the wording 'Peperone di Pontecorvo' followed by 'Denominazione di Origine Protetta' and its abbreviation 'D.O.P.'.
