Pomodoro di Pachino

Also known as: Pachino tomato, Ciliegino di Pachino

Pomodoro di Pachino PGI covers fresh tomatoes of the species Lycopersicum esculentum Mill. grown in a defined area of south-eastern Sicily, produced in three types — smooth round, ribbed, and cherry — and distinguished by firm flesh, a small placenta cavity, and a quantity of soluble solids greater than Brix 4,5, placing them in the extra or prime product categories.

About this designation

Registered as a PGI under file number PGI-IT-0153 and assigned eAmbrosia identifier EUGI00000013599, Pomodoro di Pachino received EU protection on 13 July 2002. The designation is held by the Consorzio di tutela IGP Pomodoro di Pachino. The production area comprises the whole of the municipalities of Pachino and Portopalo di Capo Passero and parts of the municipalities of Noto (Province of Syracuse) and Ispica (Province of Ragusa), in south-eastern Sicily. Cultivation must take place within this defined area using a protected environment — glasshouses and tunnels covered with polyethylene film or other covering, or, in summer, structures covered with insect-proof nets. Cultivation other than in soil is not permitted. The fruit must belong to the extra or prime product categories and must be whole, fresh in appearance, sound, clean, and free of any foreign smell or taste. Packaging must be carried out within the municipalities of the production area, within 24 hours of picking, in new single-use packaging weighing no more than 10 kg. Each package must bear the distinctive Pomodoro di Pachino PGI logo, the name of the packer and/or dispatcher, commercial characteristics, the words 'pomodoro prodotto in coltura protetta', and the Union symbol. Individual fruits sold in open packaging must carry adhesive labels bearing the PGI distinctive logo.
