Riso del Po Delta

Riso del Delta del Po is a PGI-protected Japonica Super-fino grade rice grown in the Po Delta across the provinces of Rovigo and Ferrara. Only the Carnaroli, Volano, Baldo, Arborio, Cammeo, Karnak, Telemaco, Caravaggio and Keope varieties are permitted. Grains are characterised as large, translucent or pearly and compact, with a high protein content, high absorption capacity and good cooking firmness.

About this designation

Registered under file number PGI-IT-0712 and granted EU protection on 15 July 2008, Riso del Delta del Po is produced in the easternmost cone of the Po valley, bordered to the east by the Adriatic Sea, to the north by the Adige River and to the south by the Ferrara-Porto Garibaldi Canal. In Veneto, production is confined to the province of Rovigo, in the municipalities of Ariano nel Polesine, Porto Viro, Taglio di Po, Porto Tolle, Corbola, Papozze, Rosolina and Loreo. In Emilia Romagna, it takes place in the province of Ferrara, in the municipalities of Comacchio, Goro, Codigoro, Lagosanto, Massa Fiscaglia, Migliaro, Migliarino, Ostellato, Mesola, Jolanda di Savoia and Berra. The designation covers exclusively Japonica Super-fino grade rice of the Carnaroli, Volano, Baldo, Arborio, Cammeo, Karnak, Telemaco, Caravaggio and Keope varieties. Processing from rice to rice — dehulling and milling — must take place within the PGI area. Packaging must display the term 'Riso del Delta del Po' followed by 'Indicazione Geografica Protetta' or the abbreviation 'IGP' in a minimum font of 7 pt, the PGI logo at a minimum size of 40 mm × 25 mm, and the EU PGI logo. Labelling must identify the food name and the specific variety contained, according to a defined correspondence table.
