Sedano Bianco di Sperlonga
Also known as: Sedano Sperlonga
Sedano Bianco di Sperlonga is a white celery PGI reserved exclusively for the 'Bianco di Sperlonga' ecotype of Apium graveolens L. var dulce Mill., grown within the municipalities of Fondi and Sperlonga in the Latina province of Italy. Its characteristic light-coloured stalks, low fibrousness, and mild, moderately aromatic flavour are intrinsic to the ecotype and to the saline marshland soils of its defined production area.
About this designation
Sedano Bianco di Sperlonga received PGI protection on 6 July 2005 under file number PGI-IT-0481 (eAmbrosia identifier EUGI00000013662). The designation is reserved exclusively for the Sperlonga celery ecotype of the variety Apium graveolens L. var dulce Mill., 'Bianco di Sperlonga' ecotype, with white or whitish sides. The geographical area is strictly delimited to the territory of the municipalities of Fondi and Sperlonga. Seed production, cultivation, and harvesting must all take place within this area. When released for consumption, the product must present as a plant of average height and compact form, with 10 to 15 light green leaves; stalks are white with a light-green tinge, not very fibrous, and characterised by barely-visible ridges. Weight ranges from 500 to 800 g for medium size and more than 800 g for large size. The specification sets minimum compositional thresholds measured on the edible part — the stalk: total organic acid content of not less than 100 mg/100g, breaking strength of not less than 20 N, and total sugar content of not less than 10.00 mg/g. Packaging must take place in the geographical production area. Labelling must carry the name 'Sedano Bianco di Sperlonga' followed by the acronym IGP in lettering larger than any other wording, together with the registered logo — a rectangle enclosing a square depicting two celery stalks lying on four waves — and the name and address of the producer and packager. The name may not be translated.
