About this designation
Registered as a PDO under file number PDO-IT-0779, with EU protection dating from 30 June 2009 (eAmbrosia identifier EUGI00000013794), Susina di Dro protects fresh fruit of the Prugna di Dro cultivar, a native plum genetically stabilised over centuries in the valleys of the River Sarca. The production area comprises twenty municipalities in the Autonomous Province of Trento, including Dro, Arco, Riva del Garda, Cavedine, Nago-Torbole, and Trento, the last limited to the districts of Cadine, Sopramonte, Sant'Anna, Vigolo Baselga and Baselga del Bondone. The specification requires that fruit be grown, cleaned and packaged within this area. At harvest, fresh fruit must attain a minimum sugar content of 9,0 °Brix and a minimum polyphenol content of 900 mg/kg. The fruit must be whole, healthy, oval-shaped and slightly elongated, with firm flesh covered in a characteristic whitish wax bloom. Packaging must be closed by net, film or cover. Labelling must display the words 'DOP Susina di Dro' together with the official logo, a stylised purple plum with green leaves bearing the words 'SUSINA DI DRO DOP' in white at its centre and 'DENOMINAZIONE DI ORIGINE PROTETTA' on its outer edge. The specification prohibits any indication of origin not expressly provided for and any additional wording likely to mislead consumers.
