Vialone Nano Veronese

Riso Nano Vialone Veronese is a PGI rice produced exclusively from the Vialone Nano variety, grown and milled within a defined area of the southern province of Verona, Italy. Its grains must meet specified dimensional, physical, and chemical parameters, and the product must be packaged within the geographical area before release for consumption.

About this designation

Riso Nano Vialone Veronese holds PGI status under file number PGI-IT-1529, registered at EU level on 2 July 1996, and is identified in the eAmbrosia register under EUGI00000013406. The specification requires that the rice be obtained exclusively from the Vialone Nano variety of paddy rice. The defined geographical area comprises municipalities in the southern area of the province of Verona, including Mozzecane, Nogarole Rocca, Vigasio, Trevenzuolo, Erbè, Sorgà, Nogara, Gazza Veronese, Salizzole, Isola della Scala, Buttapietra, Sanguinetto, Concamarise, Casaleone, Cerea, San Pietro di Morubio, Bovolone, Roverchiara, Isola Rizza, Oppeano, Ronco All'Adige, Palù, Zevio and Povegliano Veronese. Growing and milling — including dehulling, bleaching to a varying extent, and secondary processing — must take place within this area. Packaging must also occur within the defined area, as transport of milled rice outside it risks microlesions on the grains due to humidity variation and mechanical stress. When released for consumption, the product must be classified as either semi-milled or semi-brown, or white. Grain dimensions must fall within specified length, width, thickness, and length-to-width ratio ranges, and the percentage of varietal impurities must not exceed 3 %. Physical and chemical parameters include a specified gelatinisation time, a minimum consistency index, and a maximum viscosity index. Each package must bear the Riso Nano Vialone Veronese PGI logo and the EU logo. The designation is managed by the Consorzio di tutela della IGP Riso Nano Vialone Veronese.
