Azeites do Norte Alentejano is a protected designation of origin covering extra virgin and virgin olive oils produced from specified olive varieties grown, processed, and prepared for market within a defined area of the Norte Alentejano region of Portugal. The Galega variety is mandatory and must constitute the dominant share of any blend.
About this designation
Registered as a PDO under file number PDO-PT-0266, with EU protection dating from 21 June 1996, Azeites do Norte Alentejano covers olive oils mechanically extracted from olives of the Galega, Carrasquenha, Redondil, Azeiteira or Azeitoneira, Blanqueta or Branquita, and Cobrançosa varieties of Olea europea sativa. The geographical area is limited to the municipalities of Alandroal, Borba, Estremoz, Redondo, Reguengos de Monsaraz, and Vila Viçosa in the district of Évora, specified freguesias of the municipalities of Évora and Mourão in the same district, and the municipalities of Alter do Chão, Arronches, Avis, Campo Maior, Castelo de Vide, Crato, Elvas, Fronteira, Marvão, Monforte, Nisa, Portalegre, and Sousel in the district of Portalegre. Processing and market preparation must be carried out within this same area. The Galega variety is mandatory at a minimum of 65%, with tolerated varieties subject to specified maximum percentages; in the municipalities of Campo Maior and Elvas, different mandatory minimums and tolerances apply. The Picual variety may not be used under any circumstances. The temperature of the paste in the press or decanter and the water and oil mix in the centrifuge may never exceed 35 °C. Olives collected from the ground may not be used. The oil must meet a minimum grade of 6,5 for extra virgin olive oil and 6,0 for virgin olive oil. Labelling must bear the designation 'AZEITES DO NORTE ALENTEJANO — Denominação de Origem Protegida', the logo approved by the PDO management consortium, and the approved Community logo. The inspection body is AADP — Associação de Agricultores do Distrito de Portalegre.
