Maçã de Alcobaça is a Portuguese fresh apple registered as a PGI under file number PGI-PT-0261, with EU protection dating from 21 June 1996 (eAmbrosia identifier EUGI00000013096). The designation covers fruit of the Casa Nova, Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Gala, Fuji, Granny Smith, Jonagold, Reineta, and Pink variety groups, produced in the defined geographical area of Alcobaça, Portugal. All production steps, from orchard planting to harvest, must occur within that area.
Tasting notes
Estremaduran apple IGP from Alcobaça-Cister monastery area. Multiple varieties (Golden, Royal Gala, Granny Smith, Reinette). Crisp tender flesh, balanced sweet-tart flavor.
HoReCa use
Maçã de Alcobaça may be marketed whole (unpeeled or peeled) or in pieces (unpeeled or peeled), with cut and peeled forms required to be packaged in barrier packaging under a modified low-oxygen atmosphere in a chilled environment.
